Animals will be housed as close as possible to investigator laboratories, dependent upon available space, NIH requirements regarding species separation, and needs of other investigators. Per diem charges are assessed for each animal to cover feeding, watering, bedding, sanitation, transportation, equipment maintenance, etc., in accordance with the NIH Rate‑Setting Manual.
Current per diem rates can be found at this link.
JHU per diem rates are highly competitive; however, investigators should expect annual increases in rates to account for increases in labor and consumable expenses. When preparing grant applications, researchers are advised to budget for a 5% annual increase in per diem rates for the next fiscal year.
The animal census is tracked via the eSirius electronic barcoding system, and PIs are billed according to animal and/or cage census.
