Central Facilities

Housing for multiple large animal species including swine, nonhuman primates, ferrets, rabbits, chinchillas, dogs, cats, fish, birds, amphibians, bats and various less commonly used species, is available at several JHU sites, including the East Baltimore, Bayview, and Homewood campuses.  At East Baltimore, most larger animals are housed in the Ross Building.  Unless approved for veterinary or scientific reasons, all animals are housed in social groups or pairs, and enrichment is provided in the form of food treats and toys. For more information, please contact  [email protected].

JHU Breeding Farm

The JHU Breeding Farm, located outside of Baltimore, MD, houses Research Animal Resource’s rhesus and pigtailed macaque breeding colonies. The facility is home to approximately 600 non-human primates (NHPs), which are socially housed in breeding groups with access to large indoor/outdoor living space. The colonies have maintained specific-pathogen free (SPF) status for many years and are seronegative for several pathogens that may affect human health, animal health, and research.

A limited number of rhesus and pigtailed macaques are available for purchase for research use, both by JHU and external investigators. The pigtailed macaque colony is supported by an NIH U42 grant and is restricted for AIDS-related research purposes.

RAR can also house macaques for certain research projects at the JHU Breeding Farm. For more information regarding macaque sales or housing of macaques at the JHU Breeding Farm, contact [email protected].
