Central Facilities

Research Animal Resources (RAR) offers housing and care for rodent species in several buildings on the East Baltimore campus, including the Miller Research Building (MRB), School of Public Health (SPH), the Ross Building, and Wilmer Woods. RAR rodent housing is also available on the Bayview and Homewood Campuses. Please contact the Rodent Resources team for more information.

RAR also operates a rodent vivarium at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. Please contact Dr. Cassandra Moats [email protected] for more information.

High Risk Housing for Rodents

The high-risk rodent facilities are reserved for laboratories that have a scientific need and IACUC approval to use rodents in the laboratory and return them to the housing facility. This return to the animal facility is approvable only if there is no overnight housing in the laboratory. The risk of contamination is much greater at night because of the nighttime activity of feral rodents that may have infections such as mouse hepatitis virus (MHV).

Review and approval of lab space is REQUIRED prior to housing mice in RAR High-Risk Return (HRR) housing. HRR housing is currently located in Ross 3 and MRB suite 20, and there are also HRR racks available in School of Public Health, Woods Wilmer, Asthma & Allergy and Homewood.

Please note: You cannot move your animals back into MRB once they have been in your lab space. Additionally, animals housed in high-risk areas in other facilities are not eligible to move directly to housing in MRB. They may only be moved to MRB under certain circumstances and with approval from the veterinary team.
